Extra Techniques

Due to the unique biomechanics of running, we expand our video gait analysis to include topics such as technique, drills, and barefoot/minimalist running.

For our runners

It’s a great time to be a runner because there are so many options available for improving run technique. It’s also a very confusing time to be a runner for the very same reason. At SoleFit, we’re firm believers that there is no one system that works best for everyone and due to the unique biomechanics of running, we expand our video running assessment for runners to include topics such as technique, drills, and barefoot/minimalist running.

Gait analysis FAQs

What is gait analysis?

Observing the patterns of movement during cycles of walking or running is gait analysis. This can be performed simply watching someone walk in an open space, or by using video cameras to capture slow motion. It is a very important tool for pedorthists to assess and treat injury and pain.

Is gait analysis only for runners?

Even though we have many running clients, gait analysis is helpful for anyone suffering from pain or problems. We can do gait analysis on a treadmill or in a hallway, so we have options for every client.

Do you see children for gait analysis?

Absolutely! We typically see lots of active children suffering from pain or injury, and also those who have parents concerned about their growth and development. Under age 12 is a reduced assessment cost but includes many of the same things we observe with our adult clients.

What do I need to bring for my gait analysis?

Bring footwear you typically wear for sport or daily use, as well as comfortable loose pants or shorts. Our running clients should make sure to bring their current running shoes as well as typical running clothing (shorts, t-shirt, sports bra, etc.).

Can I have a copy of my videos or can you send it to my practitioner?

Screenshots are often easier to interpret and can be sent via email, but video can be provided as well at a patient or referring practitioner’s request.

I’m nervous to go on a treadmill, in a lot of pain, etc. Do I need to go on the treadmill in order to get a complete analysis?

Simply let your pedorthist know you aren’t comfortable with using a treadmill and we can conduct your analysis elsewhere with the same overall result. Your comfort is our priority so we can delay the treadmill to a later appointment or eliminate it entirely. We need to observe an accurate gait pattern, so if you are not used to a treadmill, this can actually be detrimental rather than helpful.

Is a gait analysis covered by insurance?

Most of the time, the cost of the assessment alone is not covered by insurance. If custom orthotics are warranted in your case, the cost of the assessment is included in the final cost of custom orthotics so a claim can be made in this case. Check your individual plan for further details on your coverage.
