Although we are specialists of the lower leg, biomechanics, and orthotics/bracing, we’ve always stressed how important it is to look at injuries holistically in order to do a thorough assessment.

At SoleFit, we’re always on the lookout for mobility tools that can help us at home. We came across floss bands about a year and a half ago and have been very impressed with how they work in our clinic.

A good short video from the founder of Correct Toes about the importance of proper toe alignment. Try to find shoes with a more square toe box or use products like Correct Toes to help undo some of the damage!

Flexibility and mobility can hamper or help the way we move, and many people are unsure of the difference between the two.

Most of us know based on how we feel after a lousy sleep that sleep is pretty important. But many of us don’t realize just how important sleep is to recovery and general health. Studies suggest that over 80% of North Americans don’t get sufficient sleep which doesn’t bode well for those already worn down from stressful jobs, family life, or high intensity training programs. Continuous periods of bad sleep can potentially lead to inadequate cell regeneration (bad recovery), poor cognitive function, compromised immunity, high blood pressure, pre-diabetic risk factors, lower IQ and memory function, disrupted hormone balances, and increased mortality.

At SoleFit, we are always looking for new health care products that are effective and easy to use. A few months ago, we came across floss bands that are starting to be used by therapists in the US (and were creating quite a lot of buzz) and decided to give them a closer look . After ordering a few samples in for our team to try, we were amazed at how well they worked!

At SoleFit we spend many an assessment with our clients discussing the fact that as modern day humans we have lost much of our fluency of movement, mobility, stability and strength. Much of this is linked to a mis-proportioned balance between our sedentary lifestyle and our activities (or lack thereof). We tend to travel from one place where we sit to another place to sit.

We’re well into that time of year when we see a parade of ski boots and skates coming through the doors at SoleFit! With the holiday season over and the Rideau canal and ski hills open, many people are dusting off their winter sports equipment. Despite the obvious differences between skates and ski boots, these types of sport specific footwear actually have a lot in common: they are notorious for causing problems for anyone who doesn’t have an average foot (which is a lot of people!). Because skates and ski boots do not have as many variations as, say, a running shoe, most people have issues achieving proper fit, comfort, and support. Read on to find out more about how you can improve your comfort on the ice, slopes, or trails.
