Custom Orthotics
If orthotics are necessary, we ensure that custom is truely custom
At SoleFit clinics in Kanata, Ottawa, and Kitsilano, Vancouver, we take pride in providing truly custom foot orthotics, handmade in our on-site laboratory.
By keeping the entire process in-house, your Certified Pedorthist, a foot care specialist, ensures every step—from assessment to final fitting—is tailored to your unique needs. This hands-on approach guarantees a perfect fit and the highest quality craftsmanship.

Treating your injuries holistically
Custom made orthotics can make a huge difference when necessary. We also take great pride in ensuring that we educate the patient in understanding the role orthotics play in the overall fixing of the injury/problem.
Orthotics can occasionally be a lifetime necessity but are often only necessary as a treatment tool if necessary steps are being taken to fix the true source of the injury. Our 1 hour assessment gives us time to properly assess and make recommendations as to how orthotics can be used as part of a treatment plan.

Custom orthotics FAQs
How come different places charge different prices for custom orthotics?
There is no industry standard for orthotics pricing so it is up to the individual clinic to establish the worth of their product. As a patient, it is important that you check the credentials of your orthotics provider (are they a Certified Pedorthist) and if possible, get references from family, friends, colleagues who are happy with their orthotics. Be careful of clinics that charge extra for adjustments and paperwork – these SHOULD come with the price of your orthotics. Some patients need adjustments, some don’t and you won’t know which category you fall into before you wear them.
What paperwork does my insurance company require for custom orthotics?
It is important to check with your insurance provider before you obtain your orthotics so that you know what paperwork they require. Most insurance companies require a prescription from a family doctor (dated prior to the orthotics being picked up) and an official receipt from the orthotics provider. In addition, some insurance companies require information that tells them about the lab techniques used to manufacture the orthotics as well as a detailed copy of the gait analysis. At SoleFit, we are unable to provide a prescription (it is a conflict of interest for us and most insurance companies require it to come for an MD) but we do provide all of the other paperwork to all of our patients at the time the orthotics are picked up.
How long does it take to get my custom orthotics?
Our typical turnaround for a pair of orthotics is one week from the date of the initial assessment. We have an on-site lab and we manufacture them throughout the entire process.
What if my custom orthotics need an adjustment?
We encourage our patients to be picky. Seriously! We do NOT want you to have expensive closet decorators. If you are not completely happy with your orthotics, please call and book a half hour appointment with your pedorthist. Having the lab on-site means we can make adjustments while you wait. Some patients need lots of adjustments some don’t need any but we want you to come in if you are not happy. You should really love your SoleFit orthotics.
Do you do direct billing to my insurance company for custom orthotics?
Unfortunately, we do not do direct billing with insurance companies. It is the client’s responsibility to ensure they know their coverage level through their individual insurance plan, and meet the requirements to make a claim for services.
How do I know if I need custom orthotics?
We pride ourselves on our thorough 1 hour assessment, during which we help you to determine if orthotics would be right for you.
Can you make custom orthotics for my _____ (ski boot, sandal, skate, etc.)?
We can make orthotics for almost any type of footwear with our onsite lab. During the assessment, we determine which footwear we think would most benefit from orthotics.
Do I need a referral before I come to your clinic?
You do not need a referral to come to our clinic. However, most insurance companies will require a doctors prescription before orthotics are paid in full.
How often do I need to replace my custom orthotics?
This depends on the type of materials used for your orthotics. Softer shelled orthotics usually range between 3-5 years before needing refurbishment or replacement. Rigid/semi-rigid shelled orthotics range between 5-10 years before needing refurbishment or replacement. We can refurbish/recover worn out orthotics easily in our on site lab, which helps prolong their lifespan.
Do I need to purchase footwear before I am casted for custom orthotics?
This is not necessary as we can make fit adjustments to your orthotics after the footwear is purchased. Most of our clients bring new footwear to fit their orthotics in one appointment, but it is not absolutely necessary.
What is a pedorthist?
Canadian Certified Pedorthists – C. Ped (C) – are foot orthotic and orthopaedic footwear experts. They are one of the few healthcare professionals trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics. For more information see www.pedorthic.ca.
Do you have a returns policy? Can I return my custom orthotics?
Unfortunately, we do not accept returns on custom orthotics or bracing and recovery items with the exception of SUPERfeet and Correct Toes. We do have a warranty policy however, in that any item can be modified or exchanged if it is mechanically or materially defective in any way. We take great pride in our pedorthic expertise to ensure that we are recommending products prior to purchase to ensure the patient is getting the best possible fit for their needs!
Whether you’re managing pain, recovering from an injury, or looking to improve your overall foot health, our custom orthotics are crafted to meet your needs and keep you moving comfortably every day.
